Comparitech: $86,6 million in NFTs have been stolen since the beginning of 2020

A total of 166 hacks were recorded during this period, 150 of which occurred in 2022

What’s new? A study by analytics company Comparitech found that attackers have stolen $86,68 million in non-fungible tokens (NFTs) since the beginning of 2020. These NFTs are now estimated to be worth more than $896,5 million. There were a total of 166 thefts during the period, with 2 of them in 2020, 14 in 2021, and the remaining 150 recorded in the first half of 2022. March of this year was the worst month for collectors, when 31 thefts were committed.

Major incidents. The largest NFT theft occurred in January 2022. At that time, Animoca Brands' subsidiary, Lympo, lost 165,2 million native LMT tokens in a hot wallet hack. The hackers also took several NFTs out of users' wallets. The tokens were worth $18,7 million at the time of the attack.

In November 2021, Farmers World, a game built on the WAX blockchain, was hacked, resulting in hackers stealing $15,7 million worth of NFTs.

One of the largest collections, Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), was the third on Comparitech's list. In April 2022, BAYC's social media account was also hacked. Hackers posted phishing links under the guise of airdrop, causing users to lose 91 NFTs. According to analysts, the total value of the stolen tokens was approximately $13,7 million.

Earlier Chainalysis analysts said that there had been 13 attacks on crosschain protocols since the beginning of the year, with a total of $2 billion stolen by hackers. These hacks accounted for 69% of all exploits in 2022.
