What’s new? The Phuket Tourist Association (PTA) and the Bank of Thailand (BOT) are contemplating introducing cryptocurrency payments for Russian tourists. This decision comes amid sanctions that have caused Russian citizens to face severe restrictions from many countries, companies, and businesses. Visa and Mastercard have suspended services to Russians abroad, so tourists cannot pay for goods and services in Thailand with cards of these systems.

What solution has the country found? Despite the sanctions, Thailand seeks to offer Russian tourists alternative cryptocurrency payment options. PTA’s President Bhummikitti Ruktaengam stated that digital assets should be used to solve the problem of payment for Russian tourists. He made it clear that Thai businesses can start interacting with the Mir payment system.
Ordinary tourists are allowed to stay in Thailand for no more than 60 days. Despite numerous requests, the Thai authorities have stated that they will not extend visas for those who cannot return home for various reasons. The government has also stated that no tourist will be deported against their will.
