Spanish law enforcement agencies have reported the arrest of five people and the indictment of four more suspects in Denmark. All of them are connected to the case of the kidnapping and death of a man who was attacked because he owned cryptocurrency.

The investigation established that the crime was part of the activities of an international group specializing in the forcible seizure of digital assets. The investigation was conducted jointly by the Spanish and Danish police and was accompanied by searches, during which weapons and electronic equipment were seized.

The attack on the couple and the investigation

The incident came to light in the spring when a woman contacted the Malaga police. She claimed that she and her partner had been kidnapped in the town of Mijas. According to investigators, the couple was attacked by several masked men. The attackers were armed and used force.

The man tried to escape but was injured. After that, both victims were forcibly put into a car and taken to a private house, where they were held for several hours. The main goal of the attackers was to gain access to their cryptocurrency wallets.

The woman was released late at night. Her companion did not survive. Some time later, his body was found outside the city in a wooded area. Experts recorded gunshot wounds and signs of abuse.

During the investigation, the police conducted six searches in Madrid and Malaga. Two guns were found, one of which turned out to be a dummy, as well as a baton, clothes with traces of blood, phones, and documents related to the case. Investigators also collected biological samples from the crime scene.

Analysts note that such crimes are becoming increasingly common. According to Chainalysis, the number of attacks on cryptocurrency owners continues to grow and already exceeds the figures recorded during the crypto boom of 2021.
