What’s new? The US Senator Rand Paul has warned about the existence of laws in the US similar to the emergency regulations referenced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an episode of the podcast Based Politics. According to the senator, the laws that allow presidents and heads of state to invoke emergencies are very dangerous.
What else did Paul say? The senator explained that he had failed in his attempt to repeal emergency legislation during the Trump administration. He added:
“We have the same sort of statutes here, and I have long-time been an opponent of these. We actually have in the United States an Emergency Act that allows the president to shut down the internet. And so the emergency edict that Trudeau has done in Canada allows him to do some horrendous things, allows him to stop travel, allows him to detain people without trial.”
.
What events preceded it? On February 23, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that he is revoking the emergency powers that the police may use. He said:
“The situation is no longer an emergency. Therefore, the federal government will be ending the use of the Emergencies Act. We are confident that existing laws and bylaws are now sufficient.”
