What’s new? Amid the hype about the release of the new SteamDeck handheld console, Valve CEO Gabe Newell gave an interview to Kotaku magazine. In it, he criticized blockchain games, NFTs, and metaverses. In his opinion, the integration of cryptocurrencies in video games negatively affects their price and quality.
What else did Gabe Newell add? Valve chief believes that the use of blockchain in games is “super sketchy” and also leads to speculation.
“The nature of cryptocurrency payments could cause a $1 game to cost 500x that down the line.”
Newell claims that metaverses do not offer players anything new. They already had customizable avatars and open worlds with freedom of action in other video games. Back in October 2021, Valve banned all blockchain-based games on its Steam platform.
