Hackers hack the Instagram account of The Sandbox’s metaverse

What’s new? Representatives of The Sandbox metaverse have reported that the official Instagram account of the project was hacked. The attackers placed a phishing link in the profile description. The game’s co-founder Sebastian Borger wrote on Twitter that the hackers managed to bypass the two-factor authentication and other security tools of the social network. He urged users not to interact with the account in any way, the project team has already contacted Instagram tech support.

What is known about The Sandbox? The project was released as a mobile game in 2011 and a PC version was added in 2015. In 2018, The Sandbox was bought by Animoca Brands and began working on an Ethereum-based blockchain version. The platform has the native token SAND, and as of September 8, 09:40 UTC, it is trading at $0,91, having gained 3,77% per day, according to Binance. The Sandbox is the third-largest metaverse, according to Metaverse Rating. The project has a market capitalization of $1,76 billion.

On August 4, the Instagram account of the metaverse was already hacked. Back then, unknown persons also posted phishing links in it. The project team restored access in less than 24 hours and reported it was working with Brandshield and Ledger to strengthen security.

In April, a hack of the official Instagram account of the NFT collection Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) resulted in a loss of 91 NFTs worth around $2,8 million. The hackers spread the malicious link under the guise of a fake airdrop of LAND tokens.
