What’s new? Igor Kobozev, the governor of the Irkutsk region, announced his readiness to provide sites for industrial cryptocurrency mining. He added that this will be possible if mining is recognized as an entrepreneurial activity in Russia and the power lines of the settlements are not used for it.

What else did the governor say? Kobozev commented on the situation as follows:

“We are ready to provide sites for industrial mining. This can be done, [for example] in Ust-Ilimsk. But this must be done in a civilized way, a separate line should be built and not be plugged in the settlements’ networks. In this case, they are of course free to operate. When all this is formalized on a legal and legislative level, we will certainly find sites for an investor who is engaged in this entrepreneurial activity.”

What events preceded it? In October, Kobzev called on the Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak to help him fight an “avalanche-like” spike in energy consumption in Irkutsk. The governor offered to raise tariffs for miners and warned that the region's networks are struggling to cope with the increased load.
