What’s new? China will introduce a blockchain-based citizen identification system. The initiative, called RealDID, is being launched by the Ministry of Public Security in conjunction with BSN China, a network operated by the National Information Center and technology giants China Mobile and China UnionPay.
What else is known? Under the initiative, citizens will be assigned decentralized identifiers (DIDs), which can then be used to anonymously register or log into websites using private keys. Transaction data is not expected to be linked to personal information.
BSN said in a press release that it is the world’s first decentralized identity system using real names on a national level.
Meanwhile, back in October, leading Chinese social media platforms including WeChat, Sina Weibo, Douyin, Kuaishou, Bilibili, and Xiaohongshu required bloggers with an audience of over 500 000 subscribers to disclose their names and sponsor information to ensure public scrutiny.
In August, the Hangzhou authorities launched a blockchain platform for trading corporate data in the field of information technology. Over 300 enterprises, including Alibaba Cloud and Huawei, joined the exchange. In September, a $1,37 million national cryptocurrency airdrop was held among the city’s residents.
