What’s new? El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele announced on his Twitter about the purchase of additional bitcoins in honor of “the 21st day of the last month of the 21st year of the 21st century.” In total, the government has replenished its budget by 21 coins.
And we are buying 21 #bitcoin for the occasion 🥳 https://t.co/xKo80nhYOn— Nayib Bukele 🇸🇻 (@nayibbukele) December 22, 2021
What else is known about the deal? The total amount was $1,034 million. According to Bukele, the purchase of the 21 coins is filled with a special symbolism. For example, El Salvador’s land area is 21 000 square kilometers and the issue of bitcoin is 21 million coins. The transaction was also timed to the number 21 and was made at 21:21:21 local time.
“Coincidence? I do not think so!” was the comment made by the president of El Salvador.
What had happened before? As previously stated, the authorities may soon sell $1 billion worth of bitcoin bonds. El Salvador plans to invest half of the amount in the infrastructure of the world's first cryptocurrency city, Bitcoin City, and the mining of digital currency. The other part is planned to be used for the purchase of additional BTC.
