What’s new? Since the beginning of 2023, power engineers of the Irkutsk region have recorded almost a thousand new points of “gray” mining. In total, experts from Irkutskenergosbyt have added more than 5100 such addresses to the region’s map. Underground mining of cryptocurrencies is more widespread in the region’s capital. It is followed by a large municipality, Angarsk city district, where about 500 addresses are suspected of mining in the domestic sector.

Irkutskenergosbyt’s data

What other data is known? More than 300 addresses of “gray” mining were recorded on the border between Angarsk and Shelekhov districts, and in Homutovo agglomeration — 250. The next two municipalities in terms of illegal mining of cryptocurrencies are Mamonovskoye and Molodezhnoye.

Experts at Irkutskenergosbyt recalled that placing mining farms in unequipped places leads to fires. This is due to the fact that rigs for mining digital assets are energy-intensive and cannot be safely connected to household power grids.

Mining in the Irkutsk region. In 2021, the Irkutsk region became one of the nine most popular regions of the Russian Federation for mining. In August 2022, the Irkutsk region and Khakassia announced the introduction of a differentiated payment system for electricity for individuals. However, the situation in the region did not change, and its residents appealed to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to solve the problem.

Also in August, it was reported that more than 9000 devices for illegal cryptocurrency mining were confiscated from CHPs in the Irkutsk region since the beginning of the year. Later, Governor Igor Kobzev allowed the possibility of allocating areas in the region for the construction of mining farms in the case of a federal law on cryptocurrency mining being adopted.

In February this year, the Irkutsk region’s power engineers filed their thousandth lawsuit in connection with illegal mining. The most common reason for going to court is abnormally high power consumption.
