What’s new? Mexican businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, whose fortune Forbes estimates at $12,9 billion, called bitcoin the currency of freedom. The billionaire visited El Salvador, which has adopted BTC as legal tender, and visited a geothermal power plant to mine bitcoin.
What is known about the businessman? Pliego is one of Latin America’s leading entrepreneurs. He runs the Mexican television company TV Azteca and the public company Grupo Elektra, which was founded in the 1950s.
What had happened before? On September 7, 2021, a law recognizing bitcoin as a legal tender came into force in El Salvador. Since then, El Salvador has been actively buying the cryptocurrency, with the country’s reserve now standing at 1081 BTC, at the exchange rate on March 26 it is $47,9 million.
