What’s new? According to the crowdsourcing platform BTC Map, the number of companies accepting bitcoin as a payment method has tripled over the year and reached 6332 by January 8. By the end of 2022, there were only 2200 such providers of goods and services. In terms of regional breakdown, bitcoin-supporting firms are concentrated in Latin America, as well as Europe, the United States, and the Philippines.
What else is known? East Asia is lagging behind in BTC adoption, the main reason being the cryptocurrency ban in mainland China, which has a population of over 1,4 billion.
The number of businesses using the Lightning Network bitcoin payment protocol to accept payments is 5107. On-chain payments are allowed by 5535 companies, contactless payment method is offered by only 1050 providers.
It is important to note that BTC Map generates statistics based on the data provided by users, and therefore not all providers accepting bitcoins may be in its database.
Earlier, Mercari, Japan’s largest marketplace, announced that it will start accepting BTC starting June this year. Mercari has already launched a service where sellers can buy bitcoins with their proceeds.
In addition, Próspera, a special economic zone of Honduras, recognized bitcoin as a unit of account for measuring the market value of various goods and services.
