What’s new? Japanese e-commerce platform Mercari will start accepting bitcoin as a means of payment starting June this year. The company will process crypto payments through its subsidiary Melcoin in Tokyo, converting the digital asset into yen. This way, buyers will be able to choose to pay in BTC, while sellers will receive fiat money.
What else is known? Mercari will not publish prices in bitcoins, and goods will be offered for sale in fiat. However, customers will be able to choose BTC as a payment method when shopping on the website.
Mercari was founded in 2013 and is Japan’s largest marketplace. In July 2023, the company said it had 22 million monthly users.
Mercari has launched a number of cryptocurrency-related products in recent months, including the Mercari Bitcoin digital asset trading service. It allows one to buy and sell BTC using proceeds from sales on the platform and also offers a loyalty system. The company said Mercari Bitcoin passed the 1 million user mark in October, just seven months after launch.
