What’s new? According to joint research by business social media LinkedIn and cryptocurrency exchange OKX, as of June 2022, the number of people working in the blockchain industry worldwide increased by 76% over the year. The US, India, and China are among the top three in terms of headcount in the crypto space. India is the country with the fastest growing talent pool with a growth rate of 122%. It is followed by Canada (106%) and Singapore (92%).
What else does the research say? Spain ranks first in terms of the number of new job listings related to blockchain technology, with an increase of 609% in the country over the year. Next comes Canada with 560% and Brazil with 518%.
19% of crypto space employees work in the financial sector, 16% in engineering, and another 6% in business development and sales. The research also notes a significant shortage of professionals with technical and IT skills.
Despite the increase in jobs in the crypto sector, many companies have laid off employees amid the market downturn. For example, crypto exchanges Gemini, Coinbase, and Huobi have laid off 10, 18, and 30% of employees, respectively. The Bybit exchange cuts 20-30% of staff and the OpenSea NFT marketplace by 20%. Online broker Robinhood reduced its staff by 23%, and trading platform Bitpanda by more than 70%.
