What’s new? While Apple’s official presentation was taking place on September 9, fraudulent broadcasts appeared on YouTube on several channels. Attackers used Apple CEO Tim Cook’s deepfake to fraudulently obtain cryptocurrency during the official iPhone 16 presentation. The CEO allegedly invited viewers to send BTC, ETH, Tether or Dogecoin to a crypto wallet, claiming that Apple would refund them double the amount:

“Once you complete your deposit, the system will automatically process it and send back double the amount of the cryptocurrency you deposited.”

One of the channels, posing as “Apple US,” gained hundreds of thousands of views, but a large portion of them likely came from bots. As a result, the videos have been removed and the accounts associated with those broadcasts have been blocked.

Previously, there were already recorded cases when scammers conducted broadcasts in order to steal funds from gullible users. Thus, in September 2022, during the online presentation of new Apple equipment, crypto fraudsters launched their own broadcast on YouTube. Under the video was a link that masqueraded as the official Apple website, but actually led to a phishing page.
