What's new? From 2022, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa will issue blockchain-based certificates to its graduates. Each qualification document issued by the university will have a QR code. The institution is adopting a blockchain-based certification system to prevent certificate forgery and fraud, Mybroadband reports.

What do university officials say? Tinus van Zyl, director of the university's central academic administration, explained why blockchain-based diplomas are better than the digital certificate system that UJ introduced earlier. Using a blockchain-based system means that potential employers and third parties will be able to verify the authenticity of a graduate's document. He added:

“The public is now able to validate the awarded qualifications for UJ graduates without having to contact the University or having to go through a verification agency, just by scanning the QR code on the certificate and best of all, at no cost.”

Who else has used the blockchain? In March, one of the world’s largest mobile operators, Vodafone, announced the test launch of a new blockchain platform. Vodafone’s upcoming plans include using a platform called Digital Asset Broker (DAB).

In September 2021, the Russian Federation of Practical Shooting conducted online voting based on the blockchain service WE.Vote. Representatives of the Waves Enterprise platform, which hosts the service, emphasized that WE.Vote uses blockchain at all stages of the voting process, not just for storing the final results.

In December 2021, Swiss bank SEBA launched a digital token that will allow investors to acquire rights to physical gold via the Ethereum blockchain. The depositors will be able to redeem the precious metal at any time without paying fees for its transportation and storage.
