A sophisticated attacker tricked Ethereum's infamous JaredFromSubway MEV bot into approving malicious smart contracts, ultimately draining roughly $7.5 million. GetBlock AML Research breaks down one of the most unusual DeFi exploits of the year.

The incident affected only a limited number of users, while the platform’s smart contracts remained uncompromised.

Developers warned of potential risks to bridges across the ecosystem and asked exchanges for assistance.

Although Aztec Connect was officially shut down in 2024, some user assets remained locked inside its immutable smart contracts. In June 2026, an attacker exploited a design mismatch between the protocol’s Layer 1 and Layer 2 components, draining roughly $2.2 million in a single transaction.

The project team said all affected users will be fully reimbursed from the protocol’s treasury.

The attacker didn’t hack the wallets directly. Instead, they tricked the security system into approving fraudulent transactions on its own. A flaw in the signature verification mechanism led to losses of approximately $265K.

Part of the stolen funds was bridged to Ethereum and routed through Tornado Cash.

Following the latest breach, total losses tied to THORChain since 2021 are now approaching $25 million. The protocol continues to appear in investigations connected to major crypto thefts and money laundering operations.

Following the incident, the project temporarily halted trading operations and node activity.

International task force T3 FCU says it has frozen more than $450 million tied to crypto-related crime. Its investigations have involved kidnappings, terrorism financing, exchange hacks, and organized criminal networks.

Attackers are using fake job offers, insider infiltration, and malware to steal crypto funds.

One of the largest thefts involved 100 BTC worth more than $5 million.
