What’s new? Yum! Brands, the owner of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has filed several trademark applications for NFTs and metaverse. Trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis posted about this on Twitter.
Why does the company need new trademarks? , demonstrating plans to create NFT collections including virtual food and beverages products, retail services, and virtual restaurants. Kondoudis added:
“Clearly, Yum! Brands sees the potential of the Metaverse and is preparing its trademarks and brands for the virtual economy. These trademark filings follow the trend by other participants in the restaurant sector like McDonald’s, Burger King, Panera Bread, and Panda Express.”
What had happened before? In February, Josh Gerben, a trademark lawyer, reported that the fast-food restaurant chain McDonald’s has filed 10 trademark applications related to the metaverse and digital assets. The applications include “operation of a virtual restaurant offering real and virtual products” and “operation of an online virtual restaurant offering home delivery,” as well as “real and virtual concerts online.”
