What’s new? Payment company Mastercard has announced the launch of its new Spend cryptocurrency debit card thanks to a partnership with payment provider Mercuryo. The euro-denominated debit card will allow you to spend cryptocurrency stored in non-custodial wallets at over 100 million merchant locations on the Mastercard network.
According to Christian Rau, Mastercard’s senior vice president of crypto and fintech, the company’s partnership with Mercuryo builds on its growing commitment to supporting self-custody wallets.
Rau added:
“Through our collaboration with Mercuryo, we’re eliminating the traditional barriers between blockchain and conventional payments, providing consumers who want to spend their digital assets with an easy, reliable, and secure way to do so, anywhere Mastercard is accepted.”
What is special about the card? Spend is a multichain card that is compatible with various blockchains such as Ethereum, Solana, Injective, Near, ZKsync, Polkadot, TON, and more. Users will be able to maintain separate balances for the wallet and card, providing greater control over their funds. The Mercuryo platform team added:
“With features like instant card issuance, seamless integration with Apple Pay and Google Pay, and acceptance at millions of merchants worldwide, the Spend card offers a level of convenience for crypto users that traditional banking systems can’t match.”
As for fees, there is a 1,6 EUR ($1,8) one-time issuance fee and a 1 EUR ($1,1) monthly maintenance fee, in addition to the 0,95% fee charged by Mercuryo.
