What’s new? On February 5, US residents Ryan and Candice Hurley held a wedding ceremony in the Decentraland metaverse. It was the first wedding to take place in blockchain-based virtual reality. .
Information about the ceremony on the Decentraland website
How did the ceremony go? The wedding took place in the “estate” of Rose Law Group, hired for the legal registration of the marriage. There were 2000 guests: witnesses, friends, and relatives of the couple as well as Supreme Court Justice member Clint Bolick.
Is the ceremony considered legal? Currently, most states of America do not allow marriage registration via a video conference and require the couple to be present in person. However, Rose Law Group was able to develop a special “meta-marriage framework” in which Ryan and Candice signed a “virtual premarital agreement.” The document identified the virtual identities of the future spouses as well as their digital assets.
“Because the metaverse is still in its infancy, we have developed the legal paradigm for a legally recognized marriage,” stated Jordan Rose, the law firm’s founder and head.
What had happened before? In 2021, a couple from California launched an Ethereum smart contract during their marriage and tokenized their own wedding rings.
