What’s new? Ethereum mixer Tornado Cash will block crypto addresses sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a division of the US Treasury Department. . Ethereum mixer co-founder Roman Semenov stated that the changes were only made at the frontend.
What is known about Tornado Cash? The service is a non-custodial protocol for making anonymous transactions. The platform is fully decentralized and aims to ensure the privacy of transfers by interrupting the standard chain between the sender’s and recipient’s addresses.
What had happened before? At the end of March, the Ronin Network sidechain used by the popular game Axie Infinity was attacked by a hacker. With the exploit, the criminal withdrew more than $625 million in cryptocurrency (173 600 ETH and 25,5 million USDC). Following the hack, the Ronin team disabled the cross-chain bridge and the Katana non-custodial exchange.
The US Treasury Department added to the sanctions list a wallet containing 148 000 ETH from the Ronin Network hack. The Federal Bureau of Investigation linked the sidechain attack to the Lazarus hacker group from North Korea.
