What’s new? On August 11, attackers hacked the YouTube channel of rap artist Lil Nas X, which has 18,6 million subscribers. After the hack, hackers changed the channel’s name to “MicroStrategy” and aired on it a recording of a crypto conference with a classic “send one get two back” scam scheme. At the moment the channel owner managed to restore access and remove all malicious links and materials.

More about the scheme. “Send one get two back” is a fairly common way of extorting cryptocurrency on the Internet. As a rule, scammers launch a record of a crypto conference or a conversation of famous personalities. In parallel, they offer to go to a fake site, which is supposed to “double” the assets of gullible users. Naturally, after sending cryptocurrency to such sites, the assets go into the hands of scammers.

What happened before? In January, hackers hacked several popular YouTube channels about cryptocurrency, posting videos on their profiles offering to transfer funds to their wallets. On July 2, hackers hacked the British Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts to promote NFT collections Bapescaln and The Possessed. On YouTube, they posted promotional videos featuring the head of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk.

Hackers also began to spread through the YouTube phishing malware PennyWise, which can steal data from 30 crypto wallets. Links to it are posted under tutorial videos and presented as free mining software.
