What’s new? On January 3, a 29-year-old programmer was kidnapped in Greece to steal cryptocurrency. The victim was stopped under the pretext of conducting a police check, then he was handcuffed, put in a car, and taken to the forest. The criminals took away two cell phones, a wallet, and house keys from the victim, forced him to give the PIN codes of his bank cards, and unlock access to his cryptocurrency wallet. The attackers then transferred €3000 worth of assets into their account in two transactions.
What else is known? The programmer was bound with duct tape and handcuffed to the steering wheel of the car, but he managed to escape. He got to a nearby gas station and told his mother what had happened, warning that the criminals might break into his home. Police immediately went to the scene and detained one of the suspects, a 25-year-old Moldovan national.
In June 2023, two teenagers from Canada allegedly stole $4,2 million in BTC and ETH, posing as support staff of the US crypto exchange Coinbase and gaining unauthorized access to the victim’s account.
