What’s new? Iranian authorities have warned registered miners of a temporary power cut from June 22. Energy consumption in the country has reached record levels, and the authorities also note possible resource shortages due to drought. According to the Energy Ministry’s spokesman Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, there are 118 authorized miners in the country, Tehran Times reports.
What else did the Ministry of Energy say? Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi reported a record figure of 62 500 MW of power consumption was recorded last week. According to the authorities, the figure is expected to reach 63 000 MW in the near future.
In addition to licensed operators, some unauthorized miners have also started using household electricity to mine cryptocurrencies, putting additional strain on the grid.
On April 16, Iranian authorities toughen penalties for violations in the field of cryptocurrency mining. A total ban on the use of subsidized electricity for households, commercial and industrial consumers is in place for miners.
In June, miners in Texas entered into an agreement with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to shut down operations during peak demand periods. Energy consumption in the state reached record highs due to the heat wave.
