What influenced this decision? The idea of paying for a club membership using digital assets comes at a time when gyms have almost recovered from the downturn caused by the pandemic. Equinox said that its sales in the first quarter were up by 122% in the same period in 2019.
What is known about Equinox? It is a chain of fitness and health clubs with luxury gyms operating around the world. There are 40 fitness clubs in New York City. The membership fee at Equinox is over $250 per month.
What happened before? In early April, the Italian luxury brand Off-White started accepting cryptocurrency payments in stores in London, Paris, and Milan. The company made payments available in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Binance Coin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) stablecoins.
In mid-April, Taylor Travel Management Group, a leading Dutch travel agency specializing in VIP travel, stated that it would start accepting crypto payments. The company partnered with the BitPay payment system and would be able to accept Shiba Inu, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Litecoin, and Stellar.
