What’s new? Athlete Luana Pinheiro, ranked 15th in the UFC lightweight mixed martial arts league, has partnered with Bitwage payment system. The deal will allow her to be paid in bitcoin. Pinheiro has joined her boyfriend, Matheus Nicolau, who is also a UFC fighter and began partnering with Bitwage in March of this year.

Pinheiro on Bitwage. The athlete attributed her choice of BTC as a fee to her personal experience:

“I do not think I will have a problem with Bitcoin going down or up. If it was not volatile it would not go up either. Think about this: it takes on average 10-15 years for an individual to get a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. And don’t forget that I am from Brazil, so I know a thing or two about inflation and its effects.”

Bitwage is a California-based startup for payroll, billing, and benefits in bitcoin. The platform entered the market in 2017. The company's services allow individuals to receive their paychecks in cryptocurrency and companies to use tools to pay employees in digital assets.

In April, the UFC announced it would begin paying fighters bonuses in BTC. They would be awarded to the top three athletes at each UFC event based on the results of fan voting.

In June, the VeChain blockchain project entered into a partnership with the UFC. Its logos and branding would be integrated into various online broadcasts and sporting events.
