Note on the Krebs on Security blog
What is known about the software? The antivirus currently comes with a cryptocurrency miner already installed. However, the tool is not enabled by default, the users need to approve its use. The fee for mining via Avira is 15%.
What had happened before? Previously, the developers of the Norton 360 antivirus implemented a similar cryptocurrency mining feature. However, the users complained that the miner was launching without their permission.
The Norton 360 and Avira antiviruses are owned by the same company, NortonLifeLock. In December 2020, the US organization NortonLifeLock bought Germany's Avira.
