Key points:
- The teenagers stole $3.1 million in cryptocurrency while posing as Amazon couriers and were arrested just hours later.
- The decisive factor in their arrest was social media posts in which they bragged about the robbery and the ride in the stolen car.
Three teenagers in the UK attempted a brazen robbery by posing as Amazon couriers, but were arrested just hours later. Their own social media posts became the key reason for their capture. The suspects stole cryptocurrency worth approximately $3.1 million. At the time of the crime, they were 16 and 17 years old, and the target was a home in East London.
Disguised as delivery drivers, the teens gained access to the house, forced the homeowner to transfer digital assets, and fled in the victim’s vehicle—a blue BMW X3. According to Standard UK, shortly after escaping, the suspects began bragging about the robbery online, which played a crucial role in their arrest.
Social Media as Evidence
Almost immediately after the crime, the attackers posted videos on Snapchat from inside the stolen car. The footage shows them driving away, vaping, and openly boasting about what they had done. Another video captured the moment when the victim was forced to transfer cryptocurrency. Later, CCTV cameras recorded one of the suspects running down the street.
By that time, the homeowner had already reported the BMW as stolen. Automatic license plate recognition cameras detected the vehicle on the M1 motorway in Northamptonshire less than three hours after the theft. The information was quickly shared with other police units, allowing officers to begin a coordinated pursuit.
In 2025 the number of cryptocurrency thefts increased by 169%
Experts attribute the increase to the rising price of иitcoin and the risks of storing assets
The case moved to court quickly. At Sheffield Crown Court, Faris Hasan and Mikail Bethune, both 18 at the time of sentencing, along with their 17-year-old accomplice, were sentenced to a total of 16 years in a youth detention facility. They were convicted of aggravated burglary and related offenses.
Importantly, the stolen cryptocurrency was tracked and recovered within 72 hours. Two weeks later, the funds were fully returned to the victim. Detective Jonathan Leung, who led the investigation, said the teens believed the attention they received on social media would help them build an audience. Instead, it only provided additional evidence against them. He also highlighted the role of the Metropolitan Police’s economic crime unit and the strong cooperation between different police forces.
