What’s new? The Interchain Foundation, a non-profit organization created to support the Cosmos blockchain ecosystem, has funded the opening of the Evmos source code as a native Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) framework. This means that the Cosmos ecosystem, which includes over 200 application-oriented blockchains, now has a standardized version of the EVM, making it easier to integrate Ethereum-based applications.

What else is known? This framework, developed as part of the Evmos project, will be supported as Cosmos EVM in the official software stack for application development, including the Cosmos SDK.

It allows blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem to integrate Cosmos EVM for full Ethereum-project compatibility, including support for the JSON-RPC infrastructure protocol and the ERC-20 token standard.

The integration will thus strengthen cross-chain interoperability between the EVM-based blockchain ecosystem and the Cosmos ecosystem, in particular through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. IBC is a standard by which blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem can exchange information and assets.

Due to the changes, co-founder Federico Kunze Küllmer will step back from his role as a core member of Evmos but will continue to advise the Interchain Foundation on interoperability and the Cosmos EVM modular architecture. His firm Altiplanic, a core contributor to the Evmos codebase, will no longer be involved in the project.

Evmos was launched on the mainnet in 2022 as a Cosmos-based blockchain to bring EVM into the Cosmos ecosystem. That same year, its developers raised $27 million in a token sale led by Polychain Capital.

Due to the latest news, the EVMOS token has lost 26% in 24 hours and dropped to $0,005376.

Starting in 2020, EVM is becoming the most widely accepted standard for smart contracts and is now found in a number of blockchains seeking to replicate the success of Ethereum.
