What’s new? The development team behind the “dog” meme token Shiba Inu (SHIB) intends to launch its own internet “.shib” top-level domain (TLD). It has teamed up with domain provider D3 to submit an application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The approval of the application will provide five billion Internet users with direct access to the SHIB ecosystem, said Shytoshi Kusama, the project’s lead developer.
What else is known? The team launched the Shib Name Service (SNS) product back in November, which allows a domain to be linked to a wallet and used as a digital passport in SHIB ecosystem applications, including the Shiba Inu blockchain and the Shibarium Layer 2 (L2) network launched in August this year. Meanwhile, blockchain domains, unlike TLDs, cannot be used in Internet browsers, email, or mobile devices.
As of December 20, 10:10 UTC, SHIB ranks 18th in the overall cryptocurrency ranking and second in the list of “dog” meme tokens, second only to DOGE, with a capitalization of over $6 billion. The asset is trading at $0,00001021 on Binance, having lost 1,64% overnight. It has gained 26,49% since the beginning of the year.
In October, Japanese car manufacturer Honda started accepting SHIB for payment.
