Key points:
- Stripe and Paradigm have launched Tempo, a blockchain for high-speed payments, which is already in closed testing.
- Visa, Deutsche Bank, Shopify, Nubank, OpenAI, and Revolut are participating in the development.
- Tempo joins a growing list of blockchains focused on stablecoins and competing to change cross-border payments.
Payment giant Stripe and crypto company Paradigm have launched Tempo, a blockchain focused on stablecoins. It is currently in closed testing, with money transfers, cross-border, and B2B payments being tested. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison noted:
“We think of Tempo as the payments-oriented L1, optimized for high-scale, real-world financial services applications. Tempo is an independent company, with Stripe and Paradigm as the first investors.”
According to Collison, Anthropic, Deutsche Bank, DoorDash, Nubank, OpenAI, Revolut, and Shopify have already become Tempo partners. A small team of fifteen people currently leads the project under the leadership of Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang.
Blockchain features
Tempo is capable of processing over 100 000 transactions per second, with finalization in less than a second thanks to a dedicated payment channel. It allows fees to be paid in stablecoins instead of native tokens and includes a built-in automated market maker. Huang added:
“As stablecoins go mainstream, there’s a need for optimized infrastructure. Tempo is purpose-built for stablecoins and real-world payments, born from Stripe’s experience in global payments and Paradigm’s expertise in crypto.”
In June 2024, Stripe partnered with Coinbase, integrating the Coinbase Base Layer 2 network into its cryptocurrency payment products. In June 2025, the company acquired Privy, a crypto wallet developer.
And in August 2025, the MetaMask non-custodial crypto wallet team announced plans to launch its own dollar-pegged stablecoin, mmUSD, in partnership with Stripe.
