What’s new? Analysts at the leading crypto market data aggregator CoinGecko have calculated that since 2021, 3,7 million of the 7 million cryptocurrencies added to the platform have stopped trading and are now considered dead. Thus, 52,7% of all cryptocurrencies whose information was available on CoinGecko have crashed.
What else is known? The largest number of projects closed in 2024 and early 2025. Notably, a record 1,8 million projects, or 49,7% of the total number of cryptocurrencies dead to date collapsed in Q1 2025 alone.
CoinGecko: In Q1, spot trading volume on leading CEXs fell by 16%
The total value locked of DeFi protocols also fell by more than 27%
Analysts note that the sharp decline in token resilience can be attributed to broader market turbulence following Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025.
At the same time, the number of new tokens has also risen sharply. Thus, in 2021, the aggregator began tracking 428 383 new projects, and by 2025 the figure approached 7 million.
CoinGecko: Failed launches and fraud have killed investor interest in meme tokens
Between January and February, trading volume on Pump. fun, the largest meme token launchpad on the Solana network, fell by 63%
Much of this jump can be attributed to the launch of the Pump.fun launchpad on the Solana network, which allowed anyone without programming knowledge to create their own token for a low fee. The platform attracted increased attention during the meme coin craze, with tens of thousands of new coins being created every day using it.
DEX Raydium on the Solana network has launched an analog of PumpFun to create meme tokens
Previously, the PumpFun team launched their decentralized exchange to preserve liquidity in their ecosystem
The analysts also prepared a comparative table on the number of collapsed projects in each year starting in 2021:
| Year of launch | Number of collapsed projects |
| 2021 | 2584 |
| 2022 | 213 075 |
| 2023 | 245 049 |
| 2024 | 1 382 010 |
| 2025 | 1 821 549 |
