What’s new? The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), run by billionaire Elon Musk, has launched accounts dedicated to auditing government agencies on the X platform and encourages citizens to report wrongdoing.
The central DOGE account now has over 30 linked profiles that cover various government agencies such as the Pentagon, NASA, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and others. The first messages posted on these accounts, including DOGE SEC, invited users to share information about “waste, fraud, and abuse.”
What else is known? According to DOGE, this new initiative aims to increase transparency and accountability at the SEC. Inefficiencies and questionable practices have allegedly hindered proper oversight of digital assets and stifled blockchain innovation.
The decision to create inspection accounts comes amid growing tensions between crypto firms and regulators, as many industry participants argue that the SEC’s approach to digital assets is not consistent. The DOGE initiative strengthens oversight by becoming an independent monitor of the SEC’s actions to work more efficiently and fairly at the regulator.
How was the idea received by the crypto community? Despite the skepticism, the DOGE initiative has gained momentum on social media, and many in the crypto space have rallied around the idea of holding regulators accountable. As the SEC’s lawsuit against Ripple nears its conclusion, the debate around regulatory oversight has intensified. The case, which began in 2020, has become a centerpiece in the broader debate over cryptocurrency regulation.
In response to the SEC’s aggressive legal action, Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal proposed a rule requiring the agency to reimburse legal fees to defendants who successfully challenge its lawsuits.
Harrison Fields, a White House spokesman, said that “access to the system is needed to identify and fix” the “waste, fraud, and abuse” that “have been deeply entrenched in our broken system.” He added that Musk’s program aims to expose financial inefficiencies in government agencies, arguing that taxpayers deserve transparency about how their money is being allocated.
