Key points:
- Over 300 old Silk Road wallets have started moving bitcoins for the first time in ten years.
- More than $3 million worth of BTC was sent to a single address, and the reasons for this activity are still unknown.
- At the same time, tens of millions of dollars still remain in addresses associated with Silk Road.
Hundreds of old crypto wallets associated with Silk Road, which had been inactive for more than ten years, suddenly came to life. Their owners transferred bitcoins to an unknown address.
According to Arkham Intelligence, approximately 312 such wallets sent BTC worth about $3,14 million to the address “bc1q...ga54”. The reasons for this activity are still unclear. Despite the movement of funds, approximately $41,3 million in bitcoin is still stored at addresses associated with Silk Road.
The activity of old addresses has attracted the attention of the crypto community
Earlier this year, Coinbase director Conor Grogan wrote that he had found about $47 million in BTC in wallets belonging to Ross Ulbricht, the creator of Silk Road. On Tuesday, he shared this observation again, responding to Plasma Foundation user “0xG00gly,” who noticed new transactions.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump granted Ulbricht a full pardon. Ulbricht was serving multiple life sentences without parole. Although Silk Road was used to trade in illegal goods, the platform played a significant role in the spread of bitcoin, the main means of payment on the service.
In May, Ulbricht made his first public appearance since his pardon. He emphasized the importance of freedom, decentralization, and unity, calling them the foundation of future technological progress, which, according to him, has the potential to empower people around the world.
