Key points:

  • Swiss startup Relai has received a MiCA license from the French regulator AMF, becoming one of the first specialized bitcoin companies with such a license in Europe.
  • The new status will allow the company to expand its activities across the EU, offer instant SEPA transfers, increase limits, and improve security.
  • In 2026, Relai plans to launch new products and marketing initiatives.

Relai, a Swiss bitcoin startup, has been granted permission to provide crypto asset trading services (CASP) in accordance with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.

The license, issued by the French Financial Markets Authority (AMF), makes Relai one of the first bitcoin-focused companies to receive such approval in Europe.

In 2024, the company raised Series A funding, and the number of app downloads exceeded 500 000. Once the passporting notification process is complete, Relai intends to expand its services to users across the EU.

Benefits of the license

The MiCA license will enable Relai to offer new features: instant SEPA transfers for purchasing bitcoin, higher trading limits, educational resources, and enhanced security. Julian Ligniger, the co-founder and CEO of Relai AG, noted:

“We’re incredibly proud to be one of the first Bitcoin companies to get the MiCA licence and are eager to expand to France first and Europe in a second step.”

Previously, the service was only available to citizens of Switzerland and Italy.

Relai has also established an advisory board comprising Jean Guillaume, Daniel Astraud, and Hervé de Kerdrel, experienced industry figures who will support the company’s European expansion.

Once it receives regulatory approval, Relai plans to develop new products, organize marketing campaigns and events in 2026, and release updates to its app in the coming weeks.

In May, cryptocurrency infrastructure provider BitGo received a license under the EU’s MiCA from the German Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).
