What’s new? On March 2, representatives of The Sandbox metaverse published a notice about a security incident that happened on February 26. According to the data provided, unknown hackers gained access to the computer of one of the team members and sent emails to users with malicious links.
What else is known? The attackers sent emails titled “The Sandbox Game (PURELAND) Access,” which contained hyperlinks to malware that allowed remote access to users’ computers and their personal information.
Immediately after unauthorized access was discovered, The Sandbox sent a notice to affected users warning them not to open false emails, click on links, and download documents from the websites to which they lead. The team then blocked the employee’s account and access to The Sandbox, reformatted the laptop, and reset all passwords.
The Sandbox strongly recommends that all users make sure their passwords are secure and use two-factor authentication, do not click on hyperlinks from emails, and install antivirus software on their computers.
Earlier, Trezor, a hardware cryptocurrency wallet maker, also warned users about the mass phishing attack via phone call, SMS, and email with messages about a “security breach” of the device.
What is known about Sandbox? The project was launched by game developer Pixowl in 2012. It is a virtual world based on the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to create, buy and sell digital assets using the SAND token. LAND tokens are non-fungible tokens (NFTs). As of March 2, SAND ranks 44th in the cryptocurrency ranking with a capitalization of $1,24 billion and is trading at $0,685, down by 2,97% in 24 hours, according to Binance. Santiment analysts singled out SAND among the assets to trade in March.
Plans to launch representation in Sandbox were announced by Playboy magazine, insurance firm AXA Hong Kong and Dubai’s virtual asset regulator. In February, Sandbox began partnering with authorities in Saudi Arabia.
