What’s new? The analytical blockchain company Crystal Intelligence received strategic investments from Tether, the issuer of USDT, the largest cryptocurrency in the crypto market with a capitalization of $158,7 billion. Thus, Tether intends to strengthen the monitoring of USDT involved in illegal activities to freeze them more effectively.
What else is known? The investment gives Tether direct access to Crystal’s suite of tools for real-time risk monitoring and fraud detection. This will strengthen Tether’s collaboration with law enforcement agencies around the world in tracking suspicious cryptocurrency activity.
Crystal Intelligence has previously worked with Tether to develop a publicly available Scam Alert database that flags wallet addresses associated with fraud.
“This strategic investment will strengthen our capacity to collaborate more effectively and reinforce a clear message: misuse USDT, and law enforcement will find you,” Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said in a statement.
Criminal loophole: how to bypass the blocking of Tether’s USDT
Suddenly it turned out that transactions on the blockchain do not happen instantly. Tether had to make excuses for this
USDT is often used in illicit transactions due to its liquidity. As such, in 2024, Tether began collaborating with Chainalysis’ blockchain analytics platform team to monitor the asset’s secondary market.
At that time, Tether also partnered with Justin Sun’s TRON blockchain team and blockchain analytics company TRM Labs to create the T3 Financial Crime Unit (T3 FCU) task force to combat financial crime.
TRON is the most popular blockchain for USDT use, accounting for 80,7 billion coins. In total, the stablecoin supports 18 blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana.
Tether says it has already assisted more than 255 law enforcement agencies in 55 jurisdictions and frozen USDT worth $2,7 billion.
In May, AMLBot experts said that Tether is unable to instantly block criminal USDT wallets due to a vulnerability in the freezing mechanism.
