What’s new? US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has started to let through confiscated Chinese mining equipment. Synteq Digital CEO Taras Kulyk told Reuters that thousands of devices have been released. Earlier, he reported that about 10 000 devices were stuck in the ports.
What else is known? In mid-February, it was reported that CBP had delayed and intensified inspections of ASIC miners from Chinese manufacturer Bitmain at the border at the request of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). As a result of the delayed shipments, some US miners have experienced outages.
“Apparently there were some folks in the CBP that really didn’t like bitcoin mining so they wanted to give the entire sector a headache, which they did quite well,” Kulyk noted.Luxor Technology Chief Operating Officer Ethan Vera told Reuters that “some held shipments are being released, but right now that is still a minority of them.”

CBP and the FCC began seizing certain mining equipment back in November last year, as reported by Blockspace. According to reporters, some devices may have been seized because they contain chips from Chinese company Sophgo, which is under a trade ban.
The company faced restrictions on the eve of the Biden administration’s departure for allegedly acting as a middleman between Taiwanese chip maker TSMC and blacklisted Chinese telecommunications company Huawei.
The current release of an unspecified amount of equipment has occurred against the backdrop of the ongoing trade war between the United States and China.
