Key points:
- MetaMask, Phantom, and other major wallets have teamed up with SEAL to launch a global phishing protection network.
- The new system allows any user to report phishing attacks, which are instantly verified and distributed among all participating wallets.
- Phishing remains the leading cause of cryptocurrency losses in 2025: more than $400 million was stolen in the first half of the year.
MetaMask, Phantom, and several major players in the DeFi and Web3 market have announced the launch of a global initiative with Security Alliance (SEAL) to create a “decentralized immune system” capable of detecting and neutralizing threats in real time. The project aims to reduce the number of cyberattacks and phishing schemes that have caused more than $400 million in damage to users over the past two years.
The initiative was a response to the growing number of phishing attacks targeting users of crypto wallets and NFT platforms. According to analysts, attackers actively use fake websites, fake browser extensions, and hacked social networks.
How the alliance will work
As part of the initiative, leading wallets and blockchain platforms have agreed to exchange information about phishing threats in real time. The system will automatically update blacklists of malicious domains and warn users when they attempt to interact with suspicious addresses. SEAL has stated that anyone from anywhere in the world will be able to send reports of phishing, which will then be automatically verified and forwarded to all participating wallets.
MetaMask, Phantom, WalletConnect, and Backpack have already joined the project, as well as a number of blockchain analytics companies. In the future, the alliance plans to connect NFT marketplaces and Web3 payment services.
MetaMask and Phantom will use their infrastructures to distribute security updates to millions of users around the world. The developers promise that the implementation of the new system will not affect the speed of the wallets and will not require the installation of additional extensions.
Why this is important for the market
Experts note that fraudsters use automated tools to create thousands of fake pages every day, rendering traditional filtering methods ineffective.
The creation of a unified threat monitoring system will allow for faster response to new schemes and reduce the risk of losses. In addition, the alliance intends to develop common security standards for wallets and Web3 protocols.
In the coming months, alliance members will conduct an open audit and publish recommendations for developers. The first version of the joint protection system is expected to be operational in early 2026.
The MetaMask and Phantom initiative could be one of the most significant steps toward collective protection for crypto users, creating a new security standard for decentralized applications and wallets.
In early October, the official account of the BNB Chain blockchain network, with nearly 4 million followers, was hacked. Hackers used the page to publish phishing links disguised as legitimate services and BSC token giveaways.
