What’s new? Christophe De Beukelaer, a member of the parliament of the Brussels-Capital Region, has agreed to receive his salary in bitcoin, according to the Brussels-based news outlet Bruzz. His monthly salary of 5 500 EUR will be automatically converted through the Belgian cryptocurrency trading platform Bit4You.

What does the deputy say? De Beukelaer, who represents the Humanist Democratic Centre (cdH) party, claims that he is the first political representative in Europe to make such a move:

“I am the first in Europe, but not in the world, who wants to put a spotlight on cryptocurrencies with such a move. My goal is to spark interest in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in Belgium.”

Who else has converted their salary into cryptocurrency? Last week, New York Mayor Eric Adams revealed that he had transferred his salary into bitcoin and ether. The mayor caused ridicule on the Internet by receiving his first paycheck right on the verge of a major cryptocurrency collapse.

Adams is not the only “crypto mayor” in the USA. Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami, Jane Castor, the mayor of Tampa, and Scott Conger, the mayor of Jackson, have announced their desire to be paid in bitcoins.
