What’s new? English football club Oxford City will become the first National League FC to accept payments in BTC this season. Fans will be able to buy tickets as well as food and drinks at the stadium using bitcoin through the Lightning Network payment protocol. To do this, Oxford City signed a multi-year partnership with British cryptocurrency exchange CoinCorner. The platform, which will also sponsor the club, will release a limited edition Oxford City FC Bolt Card for payment.
What else is known about the partnership? As part of the partnership between CoinCorner and Oxford City, the players of the team will wear the logo of BTC and the exchange itself on their football shirts. CoinCorner is also the official sponsor of Oxford City's first match on August 6.
CoinCorner CEO Danny Scott called Oxford City the first bitcoin payment adopter in the National League. He believes the move will set the trend for other divisions as digital currency “establishes itself as the new normal for sports fans and event-goers across the UK.”
CoinCorner is a British bitcoin exchange founded in 2014. It is headquartered on the Isle of Man. BTC can be traded on CoinCorner using credit or debit cards.
Lightning Network is a Layer 2 (L2) payment protocol used to speed up transactions on the Bitcoin network and solve scalability issues. Lightning Network was first introduced to the core network in 2018.
In July, cryptocurrency exchange OKX signed a sponsorship agreement with English FC Manchester City. The OKX logo will be placed on the players' uniforms during the 2022/2023 football season. In the same month, cryptocurrency exchange Binance announced the start of ticket sales in the form of NFTs for Italian FC Lazio's matches this season.
Also in July, Argentina's Banfield FC made a transfer of midfielder Giuliano Galoppo for $8 million in USDC stablecoins. The footballer transferred to Brazilian FC São Paulo.
